Breaks 3/4 of a mile out on a 6 foot swell. Known for fog, sharks, pollution and crushing walls of whitewater. Compairing this beach break to pipes is like compairing oatmeal to concrete. All the hype is a little over the top though. This powerful mushburger wave rarely breaks top to bottom (think Terramar) and will usually back off leaving you doing the huntington hop to connect the next sandbar. The easiest place to paddle out on a sizable day is in the brownish watermelon scented Tijuana river water draining out to sea however I caution you not to get your head wet.

Thank for letting all the kooks know where and when. Maybe next time you can include a detailed map, driving directions, a link to wannasurf, and maybe a treasure trail to the paddle out spot. Oh, you can stand on the beach spraying people down with shark repellent before they paddle out too.

Not too many people will ever have the balls to surf this place. It’s toxic, sharky and more a less requires a PWC since it’s almost a mile out. The spot is listed in SURFER’S GUIDE TO SO CAL and is not a secret spot. Plus, it’s dangerous to surf. We tested and found Hep C and Polio, among other things. It seems every time there are pics on this site, people claim it’s a secret…
It’s not a secret, but no need to advertise to people NOT in the know. L&L Hawaiian BBQ isn’t a secret either, but a lot of people haven’t tried it. And kooks don’t need balls to paddle out, they just don’t know any better. Most kooks shouldn’t paddle out at blacks when its heavy either, but they do….cause they are kooks. Keep ‘em at Tourmaline where they belong.
and by the way besides advertise this spot which most of people have no idea where its at most of those shots SUCKS!!! blurry, not crispy and very dark… heres a tip: work on your photos before release them online!!!

There are no secret spots in SD. The Sloughs are not going to be packed during the next swell. Have the people in SD couldn’t surf the wave anyway they like to use the “dirty” water as their reason for not trying. Before you tell us all how it is and what a kook you aren’t just relax. Last time I checked some of the best surfers and shapers in SD history are at Tourmo. Seeing how IB has more boogie boards then most other spots you might want to think about who the kook is.

@noizeewater, I think you need to get out more and enjoy life, why such hatred? I cant believe how angry you got over this. Like some users pointed out, its not a secret spot, its a very dangerous and challenging place to surf. You talk about kooks and this and that, but deep down you are just one angry person ruining it for all. To my understanding surf is about good times, good vibes and enjoying the best things the ocean as to offer. You clearly need to get out more. So, paddle out, think about it and come back with good things to say.
This is not a secret spot, people have been surfing here since the 1930′s. The reason people think it is a secret spot is cuz no one is ever out. You may be asking yourself why does such a good spot go unsurfed. Well I think being the primary route to the ocean for raw sewage from the second largest city in Baja California may have something to do with it, just a guess. You have your choice of Hepatis B, or other such yummy pathogens that live in human waste. You also have the choice of some pretty cool chemicals and heavy elements, such as Arsenic and mercury. Due to all the maquiladoras upstream, that make this stuff as either a product or bi product of manufacturing. Go ahead and surf the TJ Sloughs if you wanna glow when you get out of the water. BTW my friend surfed this spot and soon after contracted a bacteria that formed a sist behind his eye, it pressed up against his optic nerve and if he did not have it surgically removed, which he almost lost his eye in the process, it could have caused bleeding in his brain and killed him, no joke this is a real story. But if you don’t believe me then go and surf this spot during the next big swell. You will find out.

The most classic part about the barrage of comments is the one guy who claims that OB Pier, Sunset, and Windansea are secret spots. Plenty of people know about spots like the Sloughs and IB, but the water quality, location, and localism are imposing enough to scare 99% of those kooks away. As any decent surfer should know it’s gonna take a pro to take away any waves from the locals which is why I’m guessing that most people who posted here rarely surf the Sloughs.
i surfed the day after and it was still pretty damn good. head high and rippable. Also, there are lots of boogies here but the guys down here are damn fine spongers. they will bust a roll over your head and then talk shit. 5 South represent.
