A “down to the last wave” victory over Owen Wright who was surfing flawlessly through out the event. Owen got lucky and advanced out of the quarter finals on a tie breaker with Mick Fanning then moved out of the semi finals by way of a first wave interference call on Julian Wilson. His luck ran out with Kelly who surfed a solid heat to win by a nose.
