The Matix/Sun Diego Pro-Am Series Launches Its New Season and Scores Epic Pillbox
By Igor Sebastian

Event #1 of the 2006 Matix/Sun Diego Pro-Am Surf Series kicked off on October 8th and 9th at Pillbox ... uhhh we mean, "Fletcher Cove"... in Solana Beach with an insane 3-5 foot combo swell that stoked out competitors with perfect, hollow peaks all up and down the beach. All 9 divisions were at full capacity as the surfers were eager and excited to get the new season underway after the four-month summer break. The Pro-Am Final consisted of four very aggressive regular-footers that were all hungry for the $2,000 1st place pay-off. Reigning Pro-Am tour Champion Anthony Petruso from Malibu picked up where he left off in June by scoring a "9" on a deep right-hand barrel, propelling him to a very narrow victory over Sean Marceron in this, the season opener. Anthony was super stoked with the win and hooked up two Gs!

Encinitas loc-dogg Sean Marceron was on a tear all day and picked up $1,000 for an extremely close second place. Third place and $700 went to Huntington Beach's Teddy Navarro and last season's Fletcher Cove Event winner Magnum Martinez from Venezuela grabbed $500 for fourth. Getting very respectable 3rd places in the three-man Semi-Finals were Michelangelo Bernardoni from Brazil and David Diaz from Venezuela. The South American rippers each collected $250 for their equal 5th placings ... not bad at all.

In the Sobe-No Fear Airshow, it was Gavin Sutherland from Hawaii who boosted his way back into the Winner's Circle to claim the win and a $1,000 check. Getting second and $700 was Brazilian Michel Flores followed by fellow Brazilian Michelangelo Bernardoni who picked up $500 for third. Rounding out the Final in fourth was Airshow veteran Zach Keenan from Encinitas collecting $300.

In the Adio Pro Junior it was the explosiveness of Shey Yates from Encinitas that brought home the 1st Place check for $1,000. Second went to Carlsbad's Scott Cole who was super psyched to win $700. Gustavo Salazar from Huntington Beach claimed $500 for third while fellow H.B. homey Marty Weinstein finished in fourth hookin' $300.

Each contest Sector 9 skateboards sponsors "The Most Radical Maneuver of the Event" awarding $200 and a sick new complete skateboard to the surfer that blows the minds of everyone on the beach, most importantly the judges. Pro Junior Shey Yates blasted a HUGE frontside air on his way to winning the Adio Pro Junior Final, which definitely wowed the crowd and took home the cake. Congratulations on a $1,200 day Shey!

A big thanks to all of the series' sponsors: Matix, Sun Diego Boardshops, Adio Footwear, Sobe-NoFear, Sector 9, Spy Optic, Freestyle Watch Co., Creatures of Leisure, Surfer Magazine, Ezera Surfboards, West Wetsuits, Surfline, Headhunter Sunscreen and Wahoo's Fish Taco.
