Little Waves, Big Ripping at the Matix/Sun Diego Pro-Am Surf Series #5

by Igor Sebastian

Event #5 of the Matix/Sun Diego Pro-Am Surf Series was held February 26th and 27th on the north jetty at Oceanside harbor in small but rippable two-foot surf. There was a great turnout for the event with a round of 48 in the Pro-Am and a round of 24 in both the
Airshow and the Pro Junior. The waves were small but the talent level was huge as competitors were posting consistently high scores on the inside racetrack reforms.

In the Pro-Am division San Clemente's Teddy Navarro ripped his way through five super stacked heats to win his first event of the season and collect the $1,500 check. Congrats Teddy! Second place and $800 went to O'side loc-dogg Chris Abad, with H.B.'s double finalist Brett Simpson grabbing $500 for third. Making his third consecutive final in the series was Mr. Malibu Anthony Petruso, who picked up $300 for fourth. Equal fifth place went to WQS standout Gabe Kling and professional free surfer Micah Byrne, each collecting $200 for their efforts.

In the Sobe-No Fear Airshow finals Brett Simpson went absolutely ape-shiat and handily won the $1,000 first place check. Runner up was Airshow veteran Zach Rhinehart picking up $500, followed by the explosive Geoff Brack winning $300 and Josh Sleigh in fourth collecting $200.

Encinitas grom Scotty Hammonds was stoked to win his first Adio Pro Junior and hooked up $500 for the victory. Second place and $250 went to Carlsbad's Adam Knox with Brad Burdick from Laguna Beach hookin' up $150 for third. Carlsbad grom Charley Stevens finished up fourth and won $100.

Each contest Sector 9 skateboards sponsors "The Most Radical Maneuver of the Event," awarding $200 to the surfer that blows the minds of everyone on the beach, most importantly the judges. Huntington Beach heartthrob Micah Byrne won the $200 award for executing a filthy roundhouse wraparound in the quarters of the Pro-Am. Nice work Micah and congrats from Sector 9!

Event #6 of the 8 contest series is coming up on April 2-3 at P.B. Drive in Pacific Beach and Event #7 will be held April 30-May 1 at Ocean Beach pier. For more information on the Series go to or contact the contest director at (760)607-1225.
