The T stands for Technology: Surftech “flexes” their muscles with the TL2

The newest offering from Surftech sounds like a model of robot from the Terminator movies. The TL2 boards represent the most advanced surfboards on the market today to accommodate the rapid evolution of  the sport.

Research and development has been a top priority to ensure the TL2 surfboards are able to be the boards that even the top pros want to use. Tested extensively by surfers throughout the 2006 winter season, TL2’s have been put through the ringer and are proven everywhere from the heavy North Shore training ground to international ASP events.

Pat O’Connell says they are “A big improvement technology wise. TL2 boards have way more drive and they’re more responsive! They feel similar to my poly boards but they’ve got more spunk.”

TL2 shapes offered by Surftech encompass a wide range of boards used in competitive surfing and have produced models for Josh Kerr, Timmy Reyes, Shane Dorian, Pancho Sullivan and a four-fin model for Nathan Fletcher, designed respectively by Rusty, Patterson, JC, Bushman and Stretch.

“We are really excited about the positive feedback we’re getting,” Surftech Marketing Manger Sander Nauenberg said. “With the caliber of surfers riding these new models, it is going to be an eye opening year.”

Recently in the surf industry, surfboards have been getting tweaked all over the place without too much significant change. With maintaining the level of performance and soul as such a top priority to so many surfers, the word “technology” can be a four letter word. But in looking at the board as a vehicle used to improve your surfing skills, understanding the technology lets the consumer feel confident the TL2 is not a gimmick.

The Core: Techlite blanks are fused cell foam and are virtually waterproof. If you ding it, just keep surfing and fix it later, no worries about sucking in water. Master designs created by world renowned shapers are used to create a mold in order to ensure consistency. Each blank is hand-finished to get that perfect line.

Interior Fiberglass: Bag it up. Epoxy, fiberglass and “Acrylite” are wrapped around the core in a vacuum bagging process that creates a super consistent glass job. The Acrylite is shapeable foam that is found only in TL2 surfboards and is added to provide the blank a flex that everyone likes.

Fine Tuned: The composite blank is then hand-tuned by highly skilled ghost shapers (the real heroes of the shaping world).

Epoxy and Finishing Touches: An epoxy glass job is given to the blank, just as any regular type of custom shape and then hot coated and given a hand sanding, glossing and is tuned to perfection.

That’s all. There’s really nothing incredibly complex or out-of-this-world about the process that should make you think the TL2 is a board to write off as a novelty. The TL2 process follows in line with the progression of the Surftech line of surfboards, bringing the collection closer to the needs and desires of surfers who typically do not gravitate toward epoxy.

In addition, the refined process used by Surftech results in a low waste product and allows for lower Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), thereby making the ecological footprint smaller, one board at a time.

Simply put, the TL2 designs were created to provide the same strength and consistency consumers have come to expect from Surftech products, but also equipped with the flex and drive that have escaped the board line for so long. With a durable, high performance board now added to the Surftech family, the TL2 might be the most widely appealing design from Surftech to enter the marketplace since the conception of the Tuflite.
