KRISTA JOHNSON WINS WOMEN'S BODYSURFING WORLD GRAND CHAMPIONSHIP

Oceanside Pier, Oceanside, California, USA 26-27 August, 2006

Krista Johnson,14, of Carlsbad, California, USA and sister of ASP WQS surfer Dane Johnson, won the Women's Grand Champion division of the 30th Annual World Bodysurfing Championships. The youngest women's grand champion winner in the history of the 30 year event, she also won her age group division (12-17) which qualified her for the grand champion division. Competing against seasoned veterans division winners of the 18-29, 30-34 and 45 & over age groups, she ran away with the competition bodysurfing in peaky 2-3, with occasional 4 foot sets on the north side of the pier. Participating in the California Junior Lifeguard program in Carlsbad, California, Krista was encouraged to compete by her "coach" and instructor, James Fenney, former Men's World Bodysurfer Champ. Only her second World Bodysurfing Championship attempt, Krista clearly has a future ahead of her.
