Water Quality Report, August 2

Water quality at most beaches in San Diego County is safe for recreational use.

However, rain on July 31 in Carlsbad, Encinitas, and Solana Beach may have caused runoff and contamination of beach water near storm drain outlets in those areas. Avoid water contact within 100 yards of any flowing lagoons, creeks or storm drain outlets in these areas.

In addition, signs warning of contaminated water are posted at the following locations.

Closures:
These beaches are closed to water contact due to sewage spills that may impact ocean or bay waters:

Mission Bay, east

Station: Visitor’s Center beach
Status Since: July 25
Reason: unknown volume sewage spill on July 5.

Advisories:Water contact should be avoided at the following beaches due to bacterial levels that exceed health standards:

Encinitas
Station: Moonlight Beach at Cottonwood Creek outlet, 300’ north and south
Status Since: July 29
Reason: Bacterial levels exceed health standards

Torrey Pines State Beach
Station: Torrey Pines Beach at the Creek outlet, 200’ north and south
Status Since: August 2
Reason: Suspected urban runoff from the creek

Ocean Beach
Station: San Diego River outlet at Dog Beach, to 300’ south
Status Since: July 28
Reason: Bacterial levels exceed health standards

Pacific Beach
Station: P.B. Point, inside cove. 150' north and south
Status Since: July 12
Reason: Bacterial levels exceed health standards

La Jolla
Station: Children's Pool
Status Since: Sept 1997
Reason: Bacterial levels exceed health standards

For beaches next to storm drains, rivers, and lagoon outlets: During dry weather avoid contact with runoff and recreational waters within 75 feet from where runoff enters ocean or bay waters. An epidemiological study has correlated urban runoff to an increased risk of illness among ocean users near these outlets.

Re-opened: Field measurements indicate these waters are now safe for recreational use. Signs have been removed at the following locations:

Mission Bay, east
All recreation areas other than Visitor’s Center beach

San Diego Bay, in Chula Vista
Station: Bayside Park sandy beach
Status Since: July 31

There is quarantine on bivalve (two-shelled) shellfish, sardines, anchovies, lobster and crab consumption due to risk of PSP or domoic acid poisoning for all San Diego County coastal waters.
For more information on the shellfish quarantine call 800-553-4133.

For beaches next to storm drains, rivers, and lagoon outlets:
