Edito "Piso" Alcala rocks the Philippine surf scene winning the 2009 Cloud 9 Masters
Edito “Piso” Alcala, Siargao Island’s Surf Boy Wonder, continued his
domination of the Philippine surf scene taking the championship in high
performance conditions at the 2009 Cloud 9 Masters Competition in
Siargao Island. Piso has run an unparalleled winning streak, emerging
victorious in every surf comp he has attended, since his spectacular
win at the Billabong Cloud 9 International competition in August 2008,
the Philippines’ most prestigious surf competition.
The 2009 Cloud 9 Masters were held under a barrel-less Cloud 9, the
usually reliable tubing wave that has the distinction of being the
Philippines’ most famous and arguably perfect wave. Pumping consistent
2-3 foot sets, the conditions demanded a complete display of surf
skills from carves to aerials to cutbacks.
The man-to-man semi-final pitted both Piso Alcala against former
Philippine champion Dionesio “Dodo” Espejon (both StokedInc-Billabong
teamriders) in a tightly-contested heat. Piso captured the heat with a
fine display of relentless hacks and carves with an aerial thrown in.
The
finals saw Piso meeting 2008 Cloud 9 Masters champ Arkipo Figuron. With
a ferocious attack comprised of solid top turns, an aerial, into a
re-entry, Piso Alcala took home the grand prize.
Piso’s unblemished record of victories is a unique accomplishment
in Philippine surf history; no surfer has dominated the sport with such
authority. All this Piso manages to do in a quiet almost modestly
nonchalant way. “I just find myself really lucky winning all the time,”
says Piso, “especially with so many great Filipino surfers today. I
wanna thank Stoked Inc, JV Borromeo, and Billabong for all their
support. And I am looking forward to being on the Bali trip with the
entire StokedInc-Billabong Philippine Surf Team this August that Kuya
JV Borromeo is sponsoring for us, so we can train with the Billabong
Bali team there. I think we’ll really learn a lot from them.”
Edito
“Piso” Alcala. The 2008-2009 Philippine Men’s Surfer of The Year. Indubitably.
