8th Annual Tony Mezzadri Surf Contest

We are excited to announce the 8th Annual Tony Mezzadri Surf Contest and fundraiser to support spinal cord injury research. Last year's contest was the most successful yet, with over $40,000 raised and contributed for research.
This amount paid the salary of one Ph.D. scientist and a part-time assistant in the research group of Dr. Mark Tuszynski at the University of California at San Diego. That contribution directly led to the development of a new experimental approach to try to improve regeneration after injury. During the last year, several scientific breakthroughs were achieved, and we are encouraged that significant regeneration of spinal cord nerve tissues may be possible in the next few years. The Tony Mezzadri Surf Contest is a grass roots community effort that is making a real difference. We are excited that the contest could be one of the key contributors leading to a critical scientific breakthrough!

With your help we hope to continue supporting this meaningful work. This year's contest will be held on September 22, 2001, at the Ocean Beach Pier. There will also be a kick-off spaghetti dinner on September 15, 2001 at the Masonic Hall in Ocean Beach. Both events will again be hosted by the Sunset Cliffs Surfing Association and the Cal-Diego Paralyzed Veterans Association. Every dollar of the proceeds will continue to support the research being done at the Neuroscience and Neurology laboratory at UCSD.

This year we are proud to have The Toby Wells Foundation as a Diamond Sponsor. Also, we are pleased to announce that Larry Gordon, President of G&S Surfboards and co-founder of Gordon and Smith, will be serving as Honorary Chairman.
