MoMOO Benefit COncer and Auction

Encinitas – Friday January 25th, 2008, the La Paloma Theater held the First Annual MoMOO concert and auction benefiting Heifer International.  With the support of Macbeth Footwear, Hurley, DC, W.RO.N.G., Plan B, Billabong, and Nixon, Timmy Curran and Escalera rocked the house to help raise money in order to purchase cows.

The premise behind the MoMOO Benefit was to raise money for Heifer International in order to help the less fortunate in some of the more remote parts of Africa. For every $500 raised at the event, Heifer International would donate one female cow to an underprivileged village or community.  Heifer International works with communities to end hunger and poverty and to care for the earth.  Their strategy is based upon sharing their animals’ offspring with others – along with their knowledge, resources, and skills – an expanding network of hope, dignity, and self-reliance is created that reaches around the globe.  This simple idea of giving families a source of food rather than short-term relief caught on and has continued for over 60 years. Today, millions of families in 128 countries have been given the gifts of self-reliance and hope.

At $13 admission price, tickets to the MoMOO Benefit were hard to come by, as the show sold out days before the event.  Desperate onlookers begged concert-goers in line to sell their tickets so they could get a piece of history and witness this inaugural event.  One person in line received an offer of over $100 for his ticket.  Some of the crowd in attendance came as far away as Mexico to help support this cause.

Upon entry into the historic La Paloma Theater, people were treated to a meet and greet signing with some of today’s biggest action sport and musical icons.  Timmy Curran, David Kennedy from Angels and Airwaves, Corey Duffel, Pat Duffy, Damien Hobgood, Bob Burnquist, and Danny Way signed skateboards and helmets, and took pictures while passing out stickers and posters to all the kids.  “It was quite a collaboration of individuals we were able to get together for this event” said event promoter Rick Devoe.  Plenty of stoked groms would agree, as they walked away grinning ear to ear having met some of their biggest heroes.

As people began to take their seats and fill the venue to capacity (390), Escalera eventually took the stage.  Escalera is a four piece indie band that consists of Ananda Moorman on vocals, Trevor Christ on bass, and professional skaters Danny Way on guitar and Bob Burnquist on percussion.  These guys put on a great eight song set which clearly captivated the crowd with their rhythmic soulful sound and the smooth vocals of Moorman.

Between acts, Master(s) of Ceremony Chris Cote and David Kennedy hit the stage, and entertained the crowd with their ad-lib comic relief.  These two kept the mood fun and energetic, while they simultaneously ran the auction.  Surfboards from the Hobgood quiver, skateboards and memorabilia signed by Way and snowboarder Todd Richards, electric guitars, golf vacations, and surf lessons were all auctioned off to help raise money.  One of Andy Irons surfboards sold for $500, while a signed electric guitar by Tom DeLonge and David Kennedy brought in $1000 price tag.  Overall the event brought in over $10,000, with the help and support of donators such as the Naked Café, Guitar Center, House of Blues, and La Costa Resort and Spa just to name a few.

When the final item was auctioned off, headliner Timmy Curran was welcomed to the stage.   This is Timmy’s second North County appearance in less than a year.  Back in June 2007 Timmy Curran joined Switchfoot at Moonlight Beach for the Third Annual Bro Am.

Just as he did back in June, Timmy put on another spectacular show and treated the audience to a memorable experience.  The crowd really came alive when Timmy strummed the first few chords to “Blue Eyes” on the acoustic guitar.
