South Coast Surfing Series 1999 Event 2

Sunday - October 10th, 1999 - Event number two of the popular South Coast Surfing Series took place with great success at the north side of the Imperial Beach Pier. The day began under beautiful clear skies at 7:30am. The waves showed great form and power averaging between three to five feet with occasional seven footers. The sun was shinning bright during the entire competition with the temperature consistent in the middle 80's. The public also had a great presence at the event with the beach full of spectators reminiscent of a hot summer day.

In the water the surfers appreciated the positive response of the public and rewarded them with exciting rides. The great competition amongst the surfers gave the judges a very difficult task of deciding the event's top riders. The competition had twenty heats; thirteen in the Men's division and seven in the Junior's division.

The stars of the event were Matt Field, John Hoff, Loren Laguens and Danny Martinez at the junior division. Matt Field took first place with long rides in the final. In the Men's division the surfers in rank were Mauricio Arpini, Nathan Winkles, J.D.Carlson and Gary Trieschman with Mauricio taking the championship. The Brazilian surfer sponsored by SurfShot.com snapped his board in two pieces in the middle of the second heat. He was unaffected as he ran to his car, grabbed another board and came back to get the best wave of the day to win the heat. It was determination like this that enabled him to pull of the sweetest rides of the day and take the trophy home.

SurfShot.com was honored to be a part of this event and would like to give kudos to Mike and his SCSS crew for such a first-rate and awesome job. Thanks also go out to Marbella Surfboards for sponsoring the contest and of course to the great riders and fans that make this Southern California's premier surfing series. See ya November 7 at the Oceanside Pier for the SCSS's third event and until then, "Good Riding To All!"
