Tom Jones' California Paddle journey - 11/03/2007 - Ocean Beach / SD

What: California Paddle for a Plastic-Free Ocean 2007 is a world record-breaking expedition by Tom Jones, an extreme endurance athlete and environmental activist. Tom will become the first person in history to paddle the entire 1250-mile coast of California on nothing more than a 14- ft. paddleboard. San Diego Coastkeeper, a CA Paddle partner, will be hosting a welcome for Tom as his three-month journey completes in San Diego. All people-powered vessels are invited to paddle out and meet Tom to join in solidarity to campaign for a plastic-free ocean. In addition, we are also hosting a beach clean-up in conjunction with the paddle (for those of us who don’t like the winter water temps!).

Who: Tom Jones is an extreme athlete, motivational speaker, martial arts expert, international kickboxing champion, endurance runner, inventor, humanitarian and child advocate. Tom has dedicated his life to helping environmental and children’s causes, and in his latest endeavor is drawing world-wide attention to the problem of plastic pollution in our oceans.
Tom's epic three-month journey is supported by such legendary surfers as Laird Hamilton, Rob Machado, Mickey Munoz, and Jericho Poppler. San Diego Coastkeeper is a locally-based non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of the region’s bays, beaches, watersheds and ocean for the people and wildlife that depend on them. We balance community outreach, education, and advocacy to promote stewardship of clean water and a healthy coastal ecosystem.

You, the concerned San Diego resident who wants to learn more about plastics in our ocean, and most importantly, wants to be a part of the solution!

When: The journey began August 4th in Crescent City, near the California-Oregon border, and will end right here in San Diego at 9:00am the morning of Saturday November 3 rd.

Where: Ocean Beach Pier, Veteran’s Plaza (Google map)

Why: Because marine debris, such as plastics, cigarette butts (which are partially composed of plastics) and other trash, is a TREMENDOUS hazard to our ocean ecosystem that harms hundreds, if not thousands, of wildlife species through ingestion, entrapment and entanglement;

Because a United Nations Environmental Report estimated that there is more than 5.76 million tons of plastic in our oceans- that's enough to put 2/3 of California in a plastic bag; Because a recent study has shown that there is more than 6 times more plastic than plankton by mass in the Pacific Ocean; and because we all have a responsibility to our environment and the only way to make a significant change is to work together!
