National Ocean Sciences Bowl

The winner of the 2007 La Jolla Surf Bowl is La Jolla High School Team A. Congratulations to all of the hard working high school students and many thanks to our wonderful volunteers and sponsors.

High school teachers gather your most interested science students and join Birch Aquarium at Scripps for the 10th annual National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) competition. NOSB, a program of the Consortium for Oceanographic Research and Education and its partners, is a high school academic competition on topics related to the study of the oceans through SIO tours, field trips and other ocean-related activities. This program is intended to increase knowledge of the oceans by high school students, their teachers and their parents.

Your regional competition is hosted by Scripps Institution of
Oceanography and Birch Aquarium at Scripps in La Jolla, CA. One of
the goals of NOSB is to expand student and coaches knowledge of the
latest scientific research going on with the oceans and how this
impacts us globally. NOSB also opens student's eyes up to future
paths in marine biology and oceanography careers and looks great on
a resume!

Birch Aquarium at Scripps and Scripps Institution support NOSB by
offering educational field trips such as meeting SIO scientists and
touring their labs, attending the floating marine lab, ocean
kayaking and many, many more fun and exciting opportunities. There
are also many days set aside for scrimmage and study sessions to
help your team prepare for the big day. Here at the La Jolla Surf
Bowl we are proud of our growing NOSB program and believe that NOSB
is much more than just a competition, it is an experience!

Regional winning teams go on to the National NOSB Competition with
an all expenses paid trip to the hosting site and chances a national
title and other great prizes.

For more information on how to volunteer, donate, or start an NOSB team, please contact the Regional Coordinator, Judith Coats, at (858) 534-5208 or jcoats@ucsd.edu. You may also visit the national NOSB website at www.nosb.org

Do you come from a diverse or low-income school with or without a
strong science program? If you do you may qualify for our Diversity
Program, which offers funding to help get your NOSB team started.

Diversity Program

If your high school does not have a strong science program and has a
diverse population you may qualify for special funding from the NOSB
Diversity Initiative.

The Diversity Initiative's goal is to promote the NOSB program to a
more diverse student audience, three sites within California (La
Jolla, Los Angeles and Monterey) were chosen as pilot regions for
the Diversity Program. The program was initiated in 2001-02.

This program goes above and beyond the typical NOSB experience and
involvement, by supporting schools and their teams with teacher and
resource stipends, a mentor from Scripps Institution of
Oceanography, and providing additional funding to the regional sites
for expanded field experiences.
