The Solana Beach Surfing Association meeting with Jerry Ward

We have a guest of honor joining the first public gathering of the Solana
Beach Surfing Association... Jerry Ward, 89 and on it. Jerry is noted in a
recent historical society book as one of the first to surf Pill Box and
Cardiff Reef in 1936. Back in the day he was taking woodshop at Oceanside
HS. A Hawaiian transfer student showed him how to build a surfboard with
the materials they had available in school - Jerry created a 10' footer
with plywood decks and pine ribs held together with over 200 screws. Oh
yes, his surfboard had a hole with a cork to let the water out. Average
sess' was 45 minutes before Jerry had to go to the beach and purge his ride.
Prior to taking up surfing, he was a Solana Beach Lifeguard (go figure) -
that was 70 years ago.

The Solana Beach Surfing Association meeting will be
Wednesday January 29th @ 6:30 @ Masuo's Restaurant -145 S Hwy 101 -
481-6363. No host.

Matt.
