The PB Surf Club Beach Cleanup

There were over 150 people at Tourmaline on Sunday March 31st, but they weren't checking the surf. Instead, they were helping clean up the beach.

The "Point to the Pier" trash cleanup was put on by the Pacific Beach Surf Club and "I Love a Clean San Diego". Over 150 volunteers were present, picking up trash from P.B. Point to the Crystal Pier. A great amount of trash was collected, resulting in a heap of bags and lobster traps in the Tourmaline parking lot. The event was a celebration of the Pacific Beach Surf Club's adoption of this stretch of beach. The cleanup started at 9am and continued until about noon. Most of the proceeds for this great event will be donated to the San Diego Association of Lifeguards.

In addition to the cleanup, there was also food and drink. A raffle was held at the end of the morning with prizes donated from local businesses. Some businesses that helped out included Starbucks, Longs Drugs, Smart and Final, and Papa Johns pizza. Everyone who was present was having a good time, and there was a real sense of community among the volunteers.

I spoke with the Pacific Beach Surf Club's president, Mr. Richard Alvord. He considered the cleanup very successful, and was pleased with the large turnout, both of club members and of people in the local community. Mr. Alvord informed me that the Pacific Beach Surf Club (PBSC) does a minimum of 3 cleanups a year, usually happening quarterly. The club began in the 1960s, and currently has over 70 members. The Pacific Beach Surf Club will be organizing future events in the upcoming months. The Gordon and Smith/ Pacific Beach Surf Club Longboard Classic will be held on June 9th at Tourmaline. The proceeds for this event will be donated to charity. Also, on the second Sunday of September there will be an all-girls surf event at the end of Pacific Beach Drive. This is an annual event and money will be donated to the Battered Women's Foundation and the Big Sister Foundation.
