The 14th Annual Luau and Longboard Invitational Hosts First Ever Survivor Beach

Event Attempts to Set Guinness World Record and Create Support for Cancer Research

The 14th Annual Luau and Longboard Invitational announced today the first ever Survivor Beach will be held at the beach by Scripps Pier in La Jolla, California, on August 5, 2007 from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. The goal of Survivor Beach is to bring together individuals in the community in a sign of support for cancer survivors and
cancer research. Survivor Beach is a free event and open to the community.
Participants will attempt to create the longest line of surfboards in the sand starting at Scripps Pier for a Guinness World Record.

"We're hoping to gather as many individuals as we can to come out, grab a surfboard and line up to make a stand in the fight against cancer," commented Paul Grayson, co-chair of the 14th Annual Luau and Longboard Invitational. "I can't think of a better way to start the day than by coming down to the beach to support cancer research."

This year approximately 1.4 million people will be diagnosed with cancer and more than 150,000 individuals will be diagnosed in California alone. Despite advancements in detection and treatment, cancer accounts for one out of four deaths in the United States. According to the American
Cancer Society, the overall five year survival rate for all cancers diagnosed between 1996 and 2002 is 66%. There is still a significant amount of research that needs to be done to help improve the overall survival rate.

"Survivor Beach will honor all individuals in their fight against cancer and will provide a great way to show support for the importance of cancer research," added Dennis Carson, the director of the Moores UCSD Cancer Center.

Survivor Beach is sponsored by the 14th Annual Luau & Longboard Invitational which will take place on Sunday, August 19th beginning at 7:30 a.m at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California. The Luau brings together the business and surfing communities in the fight
against cancer and has raised more than $2.0 million for cancer research.
