Surfrider Foundation Invites Everyone to “Paddle For Clean Water” - 09/16/2007
The paddle features all sorts of paddlecraft – surfboards, body boards, kayaks, etc. – in a non-competitive paddle out and around the Ocean Beach Pier to raise awareness to pollution problems along San Diego’s coastline.
The Paddle will also include breakfast for all paddlers starting at 9 a.m., guest speakers, music, a huge raffle with a surfboard as the grand prize, a beach cleanup, and a post-event celebration.
Ocean Beach will be among the dozens of locations across the country hosting similar Surfrider Foundation paddle out events to highlight coastal water quality issues throughout the nation.
The decline of near-shore water quality remains one of the biggest threats to our world’s beaches and coastlines. Not only does it diminish or destroy marine habitats, it poses a significant risk to the health and welfare of the beach-going public.
About 800 beach and ocean lovers took to the waters off Ocean Beach at last year’s San Diego event.
“The Paddle for Clean Water and the celebration afterwards will be fun way for people to get involved, and a great place to get the latest information on local coastal environmental issues” said Julia Chunn, chair of Surfrider Foundation’s San Diego Chapter.
This 16th year of the Paddle for Clean Water promises a full day of fun for everyone. A new post-paddle party will be a “celebration for the sea” featuring booths highlighting environmental awareness and action; over 20 different local artists; health and wellness booths including massage, tai chi and yoga; a kids’ fun area featuring face painting, arts and crafts activities, and information on children’s arts and
dance classes; an environmental themed art show; live music and dance; food and a beer garden for people age 21 and over.
