The Diversity Initiative's goal is to promote the NOSB program to a more diverse student audience, three sites within California (La Jolla, Los Angeles and Monterey) were chosen as pilot regions for the Diversity Program. The program was initiated in 2001-02. This program goes above and beyond the typical NOSB experience and involvement, by supporting schools and their teams with teacher and resource stipends, a mentor from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and providing additional funding to the regional sites for expanded field experiences.
