he final day of the
Roxy Jam Cardiff presented by Schick(R) Quattro for Women(R),
featuring the Linda Benson Women's World Longboard Pro got underway
Sunday, with blue skies and fair conditions.  Competition was fierce
for the third and final day of the Association of Surfing
Professionals
(ASP) sanctioned six-star event at Cardiff Reef.  A
packed beach of spectators witnessed local surfers Cori Schumacher and
Jen Smith battle it out for the top prize and title of Women's U.S.
Regional Longboarding Champion.

Cori Schumacher and Jen Smith were joined by Pacific Beach longboarder
Summer Romero
and Australian Chelsea Williams in the thirty-minute
final.  From the very beginning of the contest Cardiff local Cori
proved she was in it to win it, stealing the show from day one with a
9.75 in her first heat, the highest scoring wave of the contest.  Cori
was a finalist in the Roxy Jam Cardiff in 2006, but did not compete in
the event last year, leaving her with a low seed for this year's
event.  She surfed seven heats to win the contest taking second only
once in the Round of 32, where she narrowly knocked out favorites
Lindsay Steinriede and Leah Dawson to advance to the Quarterfinals.

Though Cori stood out throughout the contest, Roxy team rider and
defending event champion Jen Smith gave her a run for her money,
jumping out to an early lead in the finals and staying close on her
heels, with the top spot coming down to a paddle race for position.
Cori was able to lock in two great waves for a heat score of 16.50 out
of 20, and with just minutes left in the heat nailed an 8.0 leaving
Jen Smith in need of a near-perfect 10 to win the final.  Though she
came up shy of win, Jen posted strong scores with a heat total of
13.05.

"I am so happy! Thank you to Roxy, the ASP and Linda Benson for giving
us this event," said Cori Schumacher.  "The waves were amazing and the
girls are all so talented. With the caliber of surfing in the
quarterfinals, it could have been the finals. I knew I just had to get
the right wave."

In addition to the $15,000 purse prize, presenting sponsor Schick(R)
Quattro for Women(R) awarded a $3,000 Schick(R) Quattro for Women(R)
Style Award to Pacific Beach goofy-footer  Summer Romero for her super
long nose ride on a righthander in the Semifinals, for which she was
awarded a 9.0.  Hansen's Surf Shop gave a second $3,000 purse prize
for the Wave of the Day to regular-footer Bianca Valenti of Hawaii for
her huge off the top 9.0 ride in the Quarterfinals.

The pro finals and award ceremony finished up in the early afternoon,
allowing the contestants to join their families and more than 3,000
spectators at the beach festival, featuring Roxy and other sponsor
tents, free hairstyling by Paul Mitchell and make-your-own custom Roxy
flip flops
.  By far the most entertaining part of the late afternoon
was the Surftech's Women's Stand-Up Paddle (SUP) Challenge, an
open-entry three-person paddleboard relay.

Closing out the weekend of fun was the board shapers raffle with seven
boards being auctioned off. Over the three day weekend  all proceeds
from the Roxy Jam Cardiff were donated to the San Elijo Lagoon
Conservancy to help raise community awareness about urban run-off and
to supplement the Conservancy's water quality testing program.

The Roxy Jam Cardiff is sponsored by Schick(R) Quattro for Women(R),
