La Jolla, California – The Rebecca and John Moores UCSD Cancer Center
today announced the 13th annual Luau & Longboard Invitational will be heldat The Scripps Institution of Oceanography on August 20, 2006 beginning at 7 a.m. The event brings together some of the most respected men and women in surfing history with business leaders, scientists, physicians and cancer patients to increase awareness and raise much-needed funds for cancer research. and scientific community in the fight against cancer. The day begins with
the Longboard Invitational, a friendly but competitive surfing contest.
The public is welcome to watch the longboard competition during the
morning. In the afternoon, festivities include a private luau with live music, Polynesian dancing, and live and silent auctions featuring surf memorabilia. The event also features a ceremony to honor the winner of the Rell Sunn – Queen of Makaha Award. The award recognizes an individual for his or her dedication to helping others in the fight against cancer in ways that embody the true "aloha" spirit.
