Windansea Menehune

During the weekend of Oct. 7 and 8, 2006,  La Jolla Shores welcomed the Windansea Surf Club and their annual Menehune Contest to town, bringing with it sunny skies and relatively clean,  peaky waves in the two to three-foot range.
The annual contest has grown considerably since its inception in the 60’s with an initial turn out of 44 contestants.  This past weekend, and some 40 years later, nearly 300 stoked menehunes turned out for the event.  The surf contest was held for menehunes, with divisions, both long and shortboard, for boys and girls ranging in age from six to 16. There was even a special under five, Super Menehune division where the youngest competitor out there charging was two!
Competitors came from near and far to surf in this annual event.  Many of the competitors were local, yet several came from as far as Orange County and even Hawaii, as the Windansea Surf Club sponsored Team Aloha to come over and surf in the event.  Team Aloha brought their warm Hawaiian spirit and tradition, along with their superb surfing to the event.  In return, the Hawaiians will be sponsoring some Windansea menehunes to come and surf in the 31st Annual Rell Sunn Menehune Surf Contest during Thanksgiving weekend on the West Side of Oahu.
