On June 10-11, 2006 at D Street in Encinitas, California, No Fear will present the revolutionary Punk Pro-Am for surfers age 19 and under (as of June 1, 2006) that will feature a revolutionary, all-new competitive format.

"I've been knocking on as many doors as I could to get anyone to listen to the fact that there are flaws in the competition format of competitive surfing," says Britt Galland, No Fear Vice President of Marketing. "The traditional format dictates that there are four to six surfers in a heat. After the heat, the top half of the heat goes on while the other half is eliminated. Basically it's a 50 % reduction format. But losers don't linger. So when a guy does lose, he and his posse go home. And by the time the final comes along, you can shoot a gun on the beach and not hit anyone."

Galland believes that the only way to effect change is to create a format that will please the people who matter most: the surfers. "The only way to change things is to come up with a new format to create a legion of happy surfers. They'll be the ones to help me spread the message. I can't do it alone because nobody wants to listen to the nutty professor."

To that end, Galland explains the competitive platform of the No Fear Punk Pro-Am. "We've come up with a format where there will be 16 finalists surfing over a 40 minute period. You'll see lead changes, and like other sports, a chance where the athletes can come back to win. During the contest, the participants will have multiple opportunities to state their case. And with 16 surfers competing over 40 minutes in the final, there will be action from the gate to the wire."

And in the end, Galland believes everyone will win. "With surfing, you have three elements: Surfers, sponsors and spectators," he explains. "The surfers want more opportunities to surf; the sponsors want more people on the beach for longer amounts of time; and spectators want to watch something more exciting."
