The Ninth Annual PB Summer Surf Off

At first glance, you may interpret it as more of a carnival than a surf contest. Whatever you want to call it, the ninth annual Pacific Beach Summer Surf Off presented by Quiksilver was rockin’.
On June 10, the contest was underway with fun, waist to head-high surf.  The team division started the day with stand outs like Ben Bourgeois surfing for Reef, Layne Harrison surfing for Julie Designs, and Dino Andino surfing for Billabong who carried their teams into the top three positions overall.  In addition to the surf event, the emcees Luke and Jonah entertained all of Pacific Beach with their crazy antics.  The winner of one beach event even took home a custom surfboard.  PB Bar and Grill was also down there cooking for all of the contestants. All I can say is that they definitely make the best bacon, mushroom cheeseburger you will ever have.
With all that was going on around the contest site, it was easy to forget that the guys in colored jerseys were slugging it out for over $7,500 in cash and prizes.  With good fortune, the wind swell continued throughout the day and some amazing surfing went down.   One of the highlights was when Andino and his son Kelohe “Brother” Andino surfed in the second round of the team division against each other.  Kelohe did not make it out of the heat, but showed that he will be a major threat to pro surfers very soon.
At the end of the day, team Reef managed to accumulate enough points to take the title away from the 2005 champs, Quiksilver.   The race for second was very close with Julie Designs pulling just ahead of Billabong and Quiksilver.  The Junior, Men’s, and Master’s divisions had some great showdowns as well.  Chris Musterman beat Craig Macia in a count back for the Master’s victory, Roger Eales connected a few rides to the beach to win the Men’s final, and Daniel Blase had two near perfect rides to win the Junior’s division.
