Windansea Surf Club Menehune Contest
WindanSea Surf Club will host its annual
Menehune/Junior Surf Contest, a non-profit surf contest for children
two to 16 years old, on October 7 and 8 at La Jolla Shores beach from
7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The event kicks off on the evening of Friday, October 6th at the La
Jolla Recreation Center for a pre-event pizza party, hosted by
Filippi's Pizza Grotto. The pre-event party is a chance for
participants to check out prizes to be raffled off, as well as the
chance to mix and mingle with other contestants.
The Menehune Contest has been a WindanSea Surf Club tradition since
the early 1960s, growing from a roster of 44 contestants to its
current size of more than 300 contestants competing in both
shortboard and longboard divisions, according to age.
This year's participants come from across the nation, including a
group of kids from Hawaii (Team Aloha) that have been sponsored by the
WindanSea Surf Club for the last four years.
Later this year, through reciprocal sponsorship, a team of surfers
from the WindanSea Menehune/Junior Surf Contest will be chosen to
compete at Rell Sunn's Menehune Surfing Championship at Makaha Beach,
Oahu.
The Menehune/Junior Surf Contest, which attracts surf legends such as
Skip Frye, Hank Warner, Debbie Beachum, Bonga Perkins and Rob Machado,
will feature a raffle with hundreds of items, including custom made
boards from local legendary board shapers such as Hank Warner Custom
Shapes, Gordon & Smith, Mitzven, Superior Glass, Diamond Surfboards,
Kane Garden, Ukulele Surfboards, Uliboards, South Coast and Surf Tech.
The WindanSea Menehune/Junior Contest is one of the major fundraising
vehicles for St. Vincent de Paul's Kids Day at the Beach and the
Special Olympics Day at the Beach , two non-profit events that
WindanSea Surf Club produces each year for challenged athletes and
underprivileged children:
