Patrick Zabrocki
Years of work protecting our oceans and coastal environment planted Patrick Zabrocki at the forefront of surfing’s recent green movement. Inspired by the fight to save the San Onofre State Park from destruction by the proposed 241 Toll Road, Zabrocki penned the State Park feature hoping to foster an appreciation within the surfing community for all State Parks and to prevent this threat from happening elsewhere. What he hopes to accomplish in his work is, at most, to inspire and, at the very least, get others to listen to ways each of us can help preserve our planet for surfing's future (including his new son, Christian Zabrocki). “What we set out to do with the State Park piece was to highlight the value of California’s State Parks to California’s surfers,” Zabrocki said. “A lot of research went into just getting the basics on some of these parks. There isn’t a lot of information about the surf because these places are heavily protected by locals. But there’s still so much potential for adventure. We wanted to let surfers know that pristine wildlife and empty lineups don’t always mean a plane ticket halfway around the world and a boat trip.”
