The National

Entering the ring this month with their fourth album, indie-buzz heavyweights The National are favored to do well. Contrary to the album’s title, this Brooklyn band is more likely to be found in a dark dive bar at last call than in an arena throwing jabs. The baritone vocal of Matthew Berninger casts a commanding yet somber haze, while drum-driven melodies are often enriched with orchestral arrangements, such as on “Mistaken For Strangers” and “Squalor Victoria.”
