Timmy Curran, Ageless Wonder
Although Timmy Curran is no longer on Tour, he is still undoubtedly regarded as one of the best surfers in the world. In a state and sport that seem to keep getting younger, Curran still manages to demand the cameras’ attention. He turned 30 this year, but his progressive aerial assault and fluid barrel riding ability get him huge press. He still gets to hang out at the events and surf in front of the crowd but he is now focused more on flips than finishing floaters. Perhaps tour life restricted Curran’s creativity, but whatever the case, in comps or not, Tim Curran continues to ooh and awe the world. And now with an album out, Curran might become a little more famous than his mellow mind ever dreamed of.
A-List BFF: Curran has been a member of the New School crew since his NSSA days. But Curran’s vault into surf stardom can be owed in large part to surf flick visionary, Taylor Steele, whose videos reigned in the 90s and established the legitimacy of the New School generation. Curran’s roles in the videos moved him and the other New School surfers to the forefront of surfing in the 90s and into the new millennium.
Big Corpo Connection: Hurley and Channel Islands.
Arch Rival: He and Donavan Frankenreiter battle it out for title of surfing’s best musician.
Greatest Hits: His debut album just dropped on September 9th, so it’s a little premature to be planning his Greatest Hits. But Curran’s surfing career is chock full of competitive highlights and Taylor Steele vid segments. He has won WCT events in Japan and France and has won every expression session at Lowers since Clinton’s first term. And as he pursues his music career, Curran’s name may pop up on another top 25-list. Download his album for free at www.timmycurran.net.
Master of This domain: Stand up brown pits at Strand with tweaked aerial flips upon exit. Timmy mixes heavy tube prowess with beach break aerial antics giving him one of the most diverse repertoires in the business.
Career Lowlight: Getting knocked off the WCT after a semi-successful tenure. He never lived up to his World Tour expectations probably because he hated watching his friends lose.
Bling Factor : Timmy favors the flannel shirt, four-day shave and jeans, but he definitely doesn’t need your spare change.
Red Carpet Moment: Opening for the Foo Fighters or Jack Johnson probably tops any of his appearances at the Surfer Poll Awards.
Evidence of Aquatic Prowess: The Taylor Steele collection.
California Roots: Timmy was born in Temecula, but don’t snake him. He lives in Oxnard now and will make heavy Strand look really easy.
