Andrew Doheny, Phenom
Newport super-grom Andrew Doheny is only 14, but he’s already racked up six NSSA West regional titles, in 2007 he won at Nationals and the U.S. Championships, was named to the 2008 PacSun USA Surf Team, and recently returned from a Mexican boat trip with an A-list crew including Bruce and Andy Irons and Dean Morrison. 2007 may have been a big year for Doheny, but look for even bigger things from him in the years to come.
A-List BFF: Bobby Fisher, as in Searching For Bobby Fisher, the child prodigy of chess. Andrew could teach Bobby how to surf and Bobby could teach Andrew to play chess. Frighteningly enough, learning chess from Fisher would undoubtedly strengthen Andrew’s competitive act.
Big Corpo Connection: Member of the Volcom family since age seven.
Arch Rival: John John Florence
Great Hits: Six NSSA West titles.
Master of This Domain: 56th Street Jetty
Career Lowlight: Placing second to John John at Nationals… repeatedly.
Bling Factor: Andrew recently won the grom division at Volcom’s VQS Totally Crustaceous Surfing Championships and $8,000. That’s a lot for a 14-year-old.
Red Carpet Moment: Won the Open Juniors division at the 2007 NSSA Nationals and the Under 16 division at the 2007 U.S. Championships.
Evidence of Aquatic Prowess A dominant competitive record, a plethora of published pics and video spots, and a travel itinerary that would make Marco Polo proud. Need I say more?
