Name: Scotty HammondsAge: 19
Hometown: Encinitas
Spot: D Street
Sponsors: Ezekiel, Salomon Wetsuits, Anon Optics, Dakine, Sun Diego, Ezera Surfboards, Ignition
Board(s): 5’10”x17 5/7”x2 1/8”
Teacher: My step dad, Mike. He’s the man.
Travel: Costa Rica, Cabo, New Jersey. They were all super fun, but my favorite trip would have to be Costa because the surf was absolutely perfect for two weeks.
Favorite experience: My favorite surf experience would have to be when I went to Costa Rica in July. I got to go there with a bunch of frenchies and the waves were so good that I was surfed out every day. This trip was amazing.
Favorite ‘CTer: I have two. Bruce and Damien. I like Bruce for his style and Damien for just about everything else. Those guys surf so good. It’s fun to see guys like Damien surf at D Street and just completely kill it.
Style comparison: I think that this question is kinda weird. I saw this question in a NSSA mag. and I was hearing kids completely claim that they surf like one of those guys. I can’t sit here and say I surf like anyone. If I had to say I surf like someone I would say that I surf like Scotty Hammonds.
Competition: I have been doing the ASP Pro Junior this year and I think I made a quarter final or something, but that’s about it. I am hoping to get on it next year. I have one year left of those things. As for local stuff, I made a few finals in the Pro Juniors for Sun Diego and ended up getting 4th overall. I got taken out by Mr. Whitlock (laughs). Thanks man.
What aspect of surfing is most important to you? Well, what is most important to me would have to be traveling. I love going on trips I never get homesick. I just want to stay in that place as long as possible. But to be realistic nowadays it is so hard to make it as a professional traveling free surfer. You have to be doing contests and getting your name out there. I am bummed that the professional scene is all about your stupid contest results, because you could surf super good but never make a heat in a contest. All I have to say is that you can’t beat a good surf trip.
“Hands down one of the best Pro Junior finals I’ve ever seen was against Ricky Whitlock and Scotty Hammonds. It was a Slater-Andy thing and Scotty was the Slater. The kid’s just classic. He’s sneaking into bars, partying with us. He’s such a fun person to be around. He’s always a pleasure to see both in and out of the water,” - Pete Cuffaro, pro surfer/party boy
