California's Best Kept Secrets

Californians rarely consider their own state when embarking on an adventurous surf trip to score empty surf and connect with the discovery and adventure that is at the core of the surfing spirit. With a highly developed and easily accessible coast, finding a place that takes us to nature and the ocean at its purest is not an easy accomplishment. If you dare take on the challenge of a real surf trip, you need look no further than the goldmine of natural beauty, outdoor adventure and high quality surfing found in California State Parks.
Hands down, the most notable State Park for surfing is San Onofre State Beach. Containing 3,000 acres, three miles of unspoiled coastline, and a bunch of high quality surf spots including the world-class Lowers, this State Park is a prime example of what State Parks represent for California. Within one of the most developed metropolises in the world lies a surfing and outdoor playground secured forever to exist as it has for thousands of years… or maybe not.
As the threat of a toll road to bisect and fragment this treasure looms, Californian surfers must realize the gravity of the precedent being set -- that if one of the most popular State Parks can be allowed to have private development within it’s boundaries, then every other State Park is at risk if the price is right. SurfShot recognizes the reality of this threat and we bring you the following profiles of State Parks that offer magnificent, adventurous surf trips right in our backyard. Remember, we cannot protect the surf we do not know.
