Charley Stevens

Name: Charley Stevens
Age: 18
Hometown: I lived in Cabo San Lucas for about seven years. Then I relocated to North County San Diego in 6th grade. Been stuck here ever since… no worries though.
Spot: Everywhere in San Diego. I pretty much try not to surf in one place too much. I am a local of the world. I don’t care what old donkeys say on their foam wasting surfboards. Even at New Break, yeah I said it.
Sponsors: Kane Garden Surfboards, Jetpilot Wetsuits, Anarchy Eyewear, Bully’s Surf Equipment. I just might ride for Sun Diego still too. I still have to find out, haha.
Board(s): 5’8”-5’11” Stu Kenson Shapes, Kane Garden Surfboards
Teacher: Cabo Kids School where I first went to school in Mexico. They had a surf class every Wednesday after school. I rode a boogie until I was surfing on it and doing little 360 tricks. My boogie board taught me how to surf.
Travel: I have been on some trips to Lowers and Uppers and to La Jolla to get away from all of the walled North County waves, haha. Real trips… I kinda went on a trip to Samoa in July, that place is one of a kind and so unaffected by Westerners, which really makes it a unique place.
Favorite experience: That was definitely on the big swell that all the people like to call Big Wednesday. Swamis could have been fun, but people ruined that day. So during that same swell we went halfway down Baja and found the Baja Super Bank, for reals.
Favorite ‘CTer: Cory Lopez, Occy, Taj
Style comparison: L.T. from the SD Chargers
Competition: I won the season overall in high school (San Diego ISF), 4th place event two NSSA Open Men’s, I won a car in Benji’s contest, and Carlsbad high school making the Game’s California Cup finals was a really chill experience.
What aspect of surfing is most important to you? Always trying to feel out what I can be doing better by watching footage and seeing the shots, traveling, and focusing in my heats. I think a big part of pushing my surfing is getting worked by waves that I don’t want to get worked by and reef that I don’t want to fall on, pay the dues.
“Charley’s always been a really good surfer. He has a good, clean style, he’s very powerful, and he pulls a lot of big maneuvers.”  - Jeff Lowe, pro surfer
