Jen Smith, World Champion

Seemed like Jen Smith couldn’t make a wrong move in 2007. Reigning at the Roxy ASP Women’s World Longboard Championship in France this summer, Smith, 21, went home with the world title—a steep bump up from the second place she earned last year. The Pacific Beach native also went big at the Roxy 2007 Surf Jam in Cardiff, scoring a solid 15.40 out of a possible 20 to beat out an impressive cadre of colleagues including the event’s former champ. With a personal invite to the 2008 Roxy Jam Biarritz Women’s World Longboard Championship burning a hole in her pocket, Smith is gearing up for another prize-winning year in the water.
A-List BFF: Apparently, herself. Smith’s Myspace page lists her favorite movies, including “Any movie that I’m in.”
Big Corpo Connection: Roxy.
Career Lowlight: It’s true: Google “Jen Smith’s boobies” and you’ll swiftly be directed to a surf blog showcasing a photo of Smith holding an artistically painted cast of her bits. But all for a good cause…the “Make a Breast” foundation made casts of several competitors’ chests at a recent comp, auctioning the casts to raise money for breast cancer awareness. According to Moniz, “Kassia Meador’s boobies did have the highest bid,” but Smith’s went for a very respectable $800.
Bling Factor: Eh? References to Smith’s relaxed approach to life appear in almost every interview published. Off the comp circuit, the un-diva-like Smith is happy to cruise the PB boardwalk with her boxer, Colin, scoping out the surf.
Evidence of Aquatic Prowess: Hmm, does “World Champion” count?
California Roots: Dig into surfing’s genealogical library, and you soon bump into Smith’s burnished Golden State creds. Papa Smith (a.k.a. competitive surfer Pablo Smith) owns Soulgrind, a 1960’s-era neighborhood skate and surf shop in PB.
