SAN DIEGUITO ACADEMY CROWNED RED BULL HIGH SCHOOL CUP NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

Santa Monica, CA-(June 19, 2007) – With ideal weather and a steady swell, San Dieguito Academy took amateur surfing to the next level by dominating the waves and taking the Red Bull High School Cup national championship title. The second annual Red Bull High School Cup national championship event was held at San Onofre Trails Beach on June 18th & 19th.

The championship game came down to a competitive match between Huntington Beach High and San Dieguito Academy, with The Academy edging out the talented Huntington squad by a final score of 74 to 61.  “The teams come together more with “The Game” format; declining swell and strategy was a key in taking the championship title,” San Dieguito Academy head coach Jeremy Sherwin said.

The San Dieguito team won bragging rights and a trip to Mexico for three days of surfing, training, coaching and instruction on game strategies from the National Surf League's Brad Gerlach, Shaun Burrell, and several other professional surfers in preparation for their defense of the 2008 Red Bull High School Cup title.

San Dieguito Academy’s Eric Snortum and Nick Suhadolnik drove the team to victory with high scoring waves throughout the competition. “The team is super stoked to have a coach that prepares us for competition; we really practiced hard for this event,” Snortum said.

The National Surf League presents the Red Bull High School Cup as the premiere high- school surfing tournament, bringing together the best amateur surfers in each region. Twenty-four schools from six different regions have participated in the Red Bull High School Cup since its start in April.

“I’m really impressed with the surfing community; we’ve had over fifty professional surfers come out to support, coach, and referee the games,” Brad Gerlach, NSL founder, said. “There is no other surf event that brings the professional surfing community out to help the kid's progress."

The Red Bull High School Cup uses “The Game” format for its tournament. The format is modeled after traditional team sports like basketball and football. This amateur surf tour is the first step to bringing a new outlook to the sport of surfing through the community and a structure people are familiar with.

The National Surf League (NSL) is a revolutionary competitive surfing organization established in 2001 by legendary pro surfer, Brad Gerlach. The NSL is dedicated to the pursuit of surfing excellence, building awareness for the sport of surfing while creating a fun competitive landscape for all types of surfers.
