Enjoy While It Last

Summer means different things to different people. To some, summer is slip and slides and lemonade, euro trips and daily hangovers, lake boats and wake riding. To others, like myself, summer means stingrays and sunburns, inconsistent swells and traffic, out-of-towners and clogged lineups. And I love it. Well, at least by August I love it.
In one month’s time, I’ll be longing for a big cold winter swell, rain, and maybe even a little bit of responsibility. As I near the end of my academic career, I realize that summer may have a new meaning when I join the nine-to-fivers. The same things I love in June, July and August may really piss me off when I’m sitting in traffic watching the remnants of that spontaneous northwest swell fade away. All young surfers should realize that the fun of summer is only fun because they can participate in every sandy, salty moment.
When school is done, so are the endless hours spent surfing, chilling, flirting and enjoying everyday from mid June to Labor Day. If that’s not a reason to stay in school then I don’t know what is. If every grom caught onto that realization there’d be some pretty well educated surfers out there.
