It’s A Grom’s Life… with BJ Hart

For many, summer looses its meaning once you’ve left academia and entered the work force full-time. Summer becomes appreciated for different reasons than it did a few years back, and is sometimes even despised. Small, crowded, and traffic congested become the words used for describing summer rather than partying, surfing, and stress free. It’s both refreshing and frustrating to speak to someone who still associates such positive terminology with summer.
Sixteen-year-old La Jolla standout BJ Hart of La Jolla High has an outlook on summer that is the polar opposite of the year ‘round nine to fiver.
“Summer is my favorite time of the year. The water’s warm, the weather is nice, the surf is fun, and you can chill with your friends all you want,” Hart said. “You also get a chance to relax and enjoy having no school and surf a lot more than you would normally get to in the winter. But I think that the best part about summer is going on surf trips to somewhere you have never gone before, and having as much fun as possible.”
Now don’t get all bent readers. What BJ is really saying is that if you get two hours off in the middle of the day between September and June, you can surf without a bunch of kids when it’s pumping. So despite the fact that you have to watch skipping groms with boards go by you as you sit in traffic on the way to work, don’t grimace. In the winter, when they’re riding shotgun in mom’s car on the way to school, they would give both arms to be in the car with you on the way to Swami’s.
