It’s A Grom’s Life With Brad Haglund

Do groms care what is going on in the world around them? Should they care about foreign policy, the economy, elections and scientific discovery? They have no say in who gets elected governor, they can’t help shape foreign policy with Iran (although nor can I), and life is just the same if a $10 million transportation bond passes or not. So why should they care? Well, according to 16-year-old Brad Haglund, they don’t. I asked San Deguito Academy student if he cares about current events and he gave the answer most groms would. He just doesn’t care.
“Well for me, as a grom, I really don’t care about what’s going on in the world.  The way I see it is that you can only be a grom once and once that’s over, you can get into all that politics and world crisis crap. But for now, I just want to be a grom. That’s basically surfing everyday and just doing what I want to do. School is really important for me too, but surfing and school basically take up all my time. But after being a grom, I definitely think I’ll be all into that sort of thing.
“The one thing that I think is funny is when you see a grom who thinks they know everything. Like, I can’t tell you how many times I heard kids say fuck George Bush and then have nothing to back it up with. I’m not saying I’m on their side. But still, don’t talk about things that are going on in the world currently and not know what the hell you’re talking about. But, like I said before, a grom is a grom and in my opinion you don’t want to waste it doing or caring about anything else or other than you, your friends and having fun.”
